About

The Mini was the brainchild of Sir Alec Issigonis, and was launched in Britain in August 1959. Its transverse engine and front-wheel drive made it a radical departure from the norm. Minis were powered by the well-proven A-series engine in 848cc, 998cc, 1098cc and 1275cc forms. The hydraulic braking system uses drum brakes on all wheels, with the exception of the high-performance Cooper S and 1275 GT versions and 1984-on models, which have disc brakes at the front. The rack-and-pinion steering and fully independent suspension give the Mini the positive, fun handling that has endeared it to millions.
