The Phase 2 Renault Mégane was introduced in April 1999 and the Scénic in August 1999. There are four petrol engines available in the Mégane/Scénic range; 1.4 litre 8-valve, 1.4 litre 16-valve, 1.6 litre 16-valve and 2.0 litre 16-valve all using a fuel-injection system. (The 1.4 litre 8-valve petrol engine was phased out in October 2000.) The three diesel engines available are the 1.9 litre D, 1.9 litre Dti and the 1.9 litre dCi (Diesel Common rail engine) which was introduced in April 2000.
