The Peugeot 106 range was introduced in the UK in 1991. Originally, the Peugeot 106 was available with a choice of 1.0 litre (954 cc), 1.1 litre (1124 cc) and 1.4 litre (1360 cc) petrol engines. At first, models were only available in a three-door Hatchback form.
The engine is of four-cylinder overhead camshaft design, mounted transversely and inclined to the rear, with the transmission mounted on the left-hand side. All models have a four- or five-speed manual transmission.
In late 1992, a 1.4 litre (1360 cc) diesel engine was added to the range, and in early 1993, five-door versions of all models were introduced. In early 1994, a new 1.3 litre (1294 cc) petrol-engined Rallye model was introduced, and in mid-1994, a 1.6 litre (1587 cc) petrol engine was added to the range. The 1.4 litre diesel engine was superseded by a 1.5 litre (1527 cc) version in July 1994.
