The Land Speed Record 1920 – 1929
This paperback is a collection of contemporary reports as published in British magazines (such as Autocar, Motor, Motorsport) and it is one of a series covering the entire history of the land speed record attempts. This one — 1930 to 1939 — is almost entirely about Malcolm Campbell’s efforts with the later iterations of his “Bluebird”, the Eyston “Thunderbolt” and the Cobb “Railton”. While this method of telling the story is a bit disjointed, this book is an excellent supplement to Charles Jennings’ “the Fast Set” which does an excellent job of telling the story of the LSR challengers in this time period but is lacking in illustrations and technical details — the area in which the Clarke book excels. I recommend that anyone interested in the history of the LSR in the 1930s buy the two books as a pair.
